Dr. Sidney Wallace and Dr. Michael J. Wallace Distinguished Lecture

The Dr. Sidney Wallace and Dr. Michael J. Wallace Distinguished Lecture was established by SIO to honor researchers, educators, and thought leaders in Interventional Oncology from around the world who have made significant impacts on the field. The lecture is dedicated to and named after Drs. Sidney and Michael Wallace to honor the father-son duo who dedicated their lives to the advancement of Interventional Oncology.  

 

Presented by Matthew Callstrom, MD, PhD

Dr. Callstrom is a professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic and an internationally recognized physician-scientist. Dr. Callstrom serves on the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors and Board of Trustees and holds key leadership roles across the institution, including physician lead for the Artificial Intelligence Program and medical director for the Strategy Department.

Dr. Callstrom is also a dedicated educator and mentor with faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational Science at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He has received multiple honors for his clinical and scientific impact, including recognition as a Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician.

With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Callstrom has contributed to interventional oncology, particularly in image-guided tumor ablation for treating cancer pain, for treatment of metastatic lung disease, and for supporting better outcomes for patients through technical endpoints for tumor ablation. He has led or contributed to multiple clinical trials in cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation, developing evidence that has provided improved treatment options for patients and contributing to improved quality of life for patients with cancer. 

He is a founding member of the Society of Interventional Oncology and served as president of SIO from 2021–2023, working with the SIO Board during a period of significant growth and innovation.
