Presented by Matthew Callstrom, MD, PhD
Matthew R. Callstrom, M.D., Ph.D., is a consultant at Mayo Clinic. He joined the staff in 2000 and holds the academic rank of professor of radiology. Dr. Callstrom is a member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. He also serves as the physician lead for the Artificial Intelligence program and the medical director for the Strategy Department at Mayo Clinic, as well as associate medical director in the Department of Development.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Callstrom is a leading practitioner and researcher in the use of image-guided intervention to treat cancer. His research focuses on tumor ablation and his work has contributed to the development of new technologies that allow better identification and treatment of cancer in the liver, kidney, bone, lung and soft tissue. He has received grants from industry, federal and foundations funders for numerous clinical trials on which he has served as principal investigator or co-investigator. Both as a scholar and practitioner, Dr.Callstrom has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards for his work, including recognition as a Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician.
Dr. Callstrom holds full faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational Science in Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and has served as a mentor and teacher throughout much of his career. In addition, Dr. Callstrom is a member numerous professional societies, including the American Roentgen Ray Society, Radiological Society of North America, and the Society of Interventional Oncology, where he has served as president.
Dr. Callstrom earned his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He completed medical school, radiology residency training and fellowship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. As a physician and researcher, he has participated in ongoing career and leadership development training.
