SIO Story

The Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) is a non-profit membership society that supports and promotes the field of interventional oncology (IO).

SIO provides a community for IO professionals to connect and work together to advance IO as the fourth pillar of cancer therapy worldwide alongside our clinical partners in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. Our society offers a space for IO practitioners to continue their professional development, access and develop research opportunities, and advocate together for the advancement of this growing specialty.

Our Past

WCIOBy the early 2000’s, robust ablation interest groups had formed and were meeting annually at radiology congresses in the United States and Europe. In 2006, the World Congress on Interventional Oncology (WCIO) held its first meeting in Cernobbio, Italy, led by experts in the US, Europe, and Asia. Annual WCIO meetings were held globally for over a decade and quickly became known as the premiere meeting for interventional oncology. In addition, WCIO collaborated with other medical organizations in Mexico (2013), Argentina (2014), Brazil (2015), India (2013), and the Middle East (2014) to provide IO education worldwide.

In 2010, WCIO expanded and began developing its first online education activities through the IO-Central website and IO Insights newsletter.

SIO was formally established in January of 2017 by the Board of Directors in recognition of this distinct and growing oncologic discipline. The former conference WCIO, now known as SIO's Annual Scientific Meeting, continues annually and is now one of many premier educational programs and offerings SIO delivers. In 2021, the society launched its first international clinical trial, the ACCLAIM study. Over the years, we have continued to grow from the support of nearly 1,000 international members, ongoing support from our industry partners, and the exciting and exponential growth of the field of Interventional Oncology.
